Comfortable cat toilet: How much cat litter do I need?

The cat litter box is a place of retreat for your pet and is an essential part of your pet's privacy. The house tiger only feels well there, however, if the quiet little place is satisfactorily furnished. Cats have a clear idea of what the perfect cat toilet looks like. If something does not suit them, the bathroom is consistently ignored until a remedy is found. Therefore, set up the litter tray in the best possible way. In addition to the cat litter box model, the correct handling of cat litter must also be taken into account.

What should I consider when filling the litter box with litter?

Even small kittens learn it from their mother: When the bladder is tight, or there is a bigger business to do, they go to the toilet. Cats quickly appreciate the plastic box with its crumbly contents. In order to meet the basic technical needs of the animal, a loose pile of cat litter would be sufficient; but to prevent the material from being carried off in the home, there are cat toilets with and without a hood. For the cleanliness in the household and the function ability of the cat WC the correct filling plays a nearly still more important role.

Perfect filling height: How high must the bedding be?

There are no guideline values for how high cat litter has to be filled. How high the filling level of the litter should be in the litter box generally depends on two factors: the composition of the material and its yield. The volume is directly related to the dimension of the litter box. The cat litter is not only available in different materials, but also different grain sizes. Fine-grained litter can have an almost sandy substance, coarse litter with a more massive or fibrous consistency takes up more space in the toilet bowl with the same weight. Many manufacturers recommend a bedding height of 5 cm. To increase the comfort of the litter tray, you may be more generous. The litter should be filled about 7 -10 cm high so that your tiger can use it properly and bury faeces in it. To reduce the filling height in the toilet is not recommended if the operability of the WC is not to be impaired.

Besides with a somewhat larger filling height, the cat faeces do not come directly with the soil of the cat litter box into contact, which is again a hygiene advantage: When cleaning the plastic tub you do not have to eliminate encrusted solids. On the other hand, an excessively high filling height can lead to the cat playing with the litter in exuberance and scraping it from the toilet. It is therefore essential to find a suitable average. If the cat tends to scratch extensively and you use an open plastic tub as a litter tray, you should choose a variant with an ejection-proof edge. The entrance height for tubs with high walls is about 15 - 20 cm for common models - sufficient distance between filling height and edge. If this is also not safe enough for you, catch a large proportion of discarded litter or odours by giving preference to a so-called hood toilet. But here the cat has to play along: With some velvet paws, it can happen that the animal boycotts a closed bath.

What does a good balance look like in terms of consumption?

In addition to the question of the filling height, when choosing a brand, it is important how much cat litter must be filled into a box. The purpose of cat litter is to bind urine. With a sufficiently large and generously littered cat litter tray, you will achieve in any case a sufficient hygienic absorption effect, particularly since with regular cleaning the absorption capacity of the cat litter tray is not exhausted. Nevertheless, the question is interesting, to estimate, how much cat litter is used and disposed of. The manufacturers of cat litter indicate so-called absorption rates with their products, values, which indicate, how strongly the litter absorbs liquid and binds as well as solid faeces encase. These values vary considerably in some cases. A good ratio for material consumption would be an absorbency of 1:2, for example, 125 millilitres of litter per quarter of a litre of liquid. Please note: The dimensioning of the litter according to a hollow dimension takes into account the question of volume, i.e. the filling level. The more productive the cat litter, the more sparingly you can use the material, by removing the lumps and the excrement with the strewing shovel and refilling the cat litter box only. In this way the initial costs amortise fast with expensive products with high yield: The material consumption is smaller.
